Walter Söhner GmbH & Co. KG won first place with it “Apprentice Theatre Project” in the Ausbildungs-Ass 2007 [Ace Apprentice] competition in the category “Industry, Trade, Services”.

Angelika Peter, training officer in Schwaigern, applied for the contest with the “Apprentice Theatre Project”.
The idea of letting the apprentices to do a play together was based on the thoughts of how cooperation and teambuilding could be improved independent of the chosen qualified job or the respective training department.

All the budding industrial clerks, precision mechanics, process mechanics and mechatronic apprentices in Schwaigern have exchanged, now, for the second time, for a 5 month-period, two hours once a week, the workbench and computer for play books and the stage.
The artistic work has been done by Udo Grunwald, an actor at the Heilbronn youth theatre Radelrutsch. He can call on long years of experience in working with young people through his work at the youth theatre.

The choice of the play is mutually chosen. In 2005 “The Dead Poets’ Society” was performed; in 2007 the play “Ein Tag in unserer Stadt“ [A Day in our City] by Udo Grunwald himself was performed.

The jury too liked the idea of looking at the overall aspect of apprenticeship and going down new paths. Furthermore they were very impressed that now the first success has been reached and solidarity and personality of the participating apprentices has growth tangibly.

For us apprenticeship is more than “just” a vocational qualification.

“Apprenticeship at Walter Söhner means more than getting just a vocational qualification. In addition to the transfer of established specialised knowledge and skills, it is important for us as an internationally positioned company, to look ahead using comprehensive, team-oriented approaches” says Angelika Peter. “We are delighted to receive the award and this shows us that we are on the right path with our idea.”

The performances took place in the Frizhalle in Schwaigern. Parents, friends and colleagues were invited and the proceeds were donated to the Kaywaldschule for mentally and physically handicapped in Lauffen on the Neckar.

For this year everything is already planned: on Thursday, 26 June 2008, once again the “Raise the curtain for the Söhner apprentices!“.

With the award Ausbildungs-Ass, the Junge Deutsche Wirtschaft, a free association of the Junior Chamber  Germany and the Juniors in the Trades, honour companies and initiatives for their exemplary performance in the apprenticeship training. The goal of this prize is the support and announcement of a new apprenticeship concept. The prize is awarded in the categories of Industry, Trade and Service and includes prize money of a total of 15,000 euros.

There were 183 companies and initiatives were in the competition for the Ausbildings-Ass 2007. The prize was awarded for the 11th time. What the prize money will be used for will be decided together with the apprentices.
